The union representing employees at Calgary's Glenbow Museum says it was informed of several layoffs and job reductions Wednesday morning.
The Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 1645 says there are 14 layoffs, with two front-line staff losing their jobs entirely and the remainder having their hours cut.
Union president Kim Hallis says staff had feared the cuts because the museum has been running deficits at over $1 million for the last three years.
She says it's a sad day at the museum.
"The collection belongs to the people of Alberta and the people in the museum here at the Glenbow are very proud to do what they do to maintain that collection for people," said Hallis. "And what's happened today has greatly affected that."
She says the financial troubles did not come as a surprise, but staff were shocked at the extent of the cuts.
Hallis says financial problems can be laid at the doorstep of management and the Glenbow board of directors.
