Frankenstorm Sandy has passed over the New York City area on her slow, destructive path north, leaving behind a trail of wreckage and mayhem from North Carolina up to at least Connecticut. The biggest mess, though, is in New York City: The streets and subway tunnels are filled with water, power lines and power stations have erupted in flames, fires have taken out whole blocks in outer Queens — and New Yorkers with cameras, both professional and cellphone varieties, captured much of the damage. But among those stunning photos, telling the story of Sandy to people anxiously scanning their Twitter feeds, Instagram, and web browsers, a number of fakes also went viral. Some helpful journalists have laid out ways to sniff out the fakes from the real thing, and others have turned to debunking the frauds themselves. Here, a lightly curated gallery of some Sandy fakes.
1. Storm Clouds Over Manhattan
Some of the photos making the rounds on Twitter are real, but have nothing to do with Sandy. This amazing view of a storm brewing over lower Manhattan, for example, is from an April 2011 tornado, captured on film byThe Wall Street Journal.
2. Flooded McDonald’s
Also in the not-fake-but-not-Sandy category is this picture purporting to be from a hurricane-ravaged McDonald’s in Virginia. It’s not. In a case of life imitating art, the photo is from a 2009 installation/film called, appropriately enough, Flooded McDonald’s.
3. Scuba Diver In The Subway
The bulk of the faux photos involve varying degree of skill with image-editing software like Photoshop. In this imaginative mash-up, a scuba diver explores a the 14th Street-Union Square Times Square subway stop in Manhattan.
4. Shark In Flood Waters, Part One
Sharks were well represented in the doctored flood photos from New York and New Jersey. This photo, from Kevin McCarty, of actually flooded Brigantine, N.J., fooled a lot of people on Twitter but mostly earned eye-rolls from his friends on Facebook.
5. Shark In Flood Waters, Part Two
This frequently-retweeted photos is also from Brigantine. A Twitter user named Tom Phillips found the shark used in this Photoshop job in a Google image search.
6. Shark In Flood Waters, Part Three
The final shark photo, also purportedly from a street in New Jersey, not only isn’t real, it isn’t new. It first made the rounds after 2011′s Hurricane Irene, when it (slightly more plausibly) pretended to be in the streets of Puerto Rico.
7. Storm Clouds Behind The Statue Of Liberty
This impressive-looking storm gathering behind the Statue of Liberty is actually from 2004, in Nebraska, captured on film by storm chaser and photographer Mike Hollingshead.
8. Not News You Can Use
In this photo, Lady Liberty looks like she’s under attack from Sandy’s massive storm surge, but really is being washed away by the Hollywood special effects team behind 2004′s The Day After Tomorrow. In a minor bit of post-screengrab doctoring, the image “has had a New York TV logo superimposed on it to fool people,” says The Atlantic‘s Alexis Madrigal.
9. Lady Liberty Hides
Given how eager Twitter users have been to sic Sandy on her, Lady Liberty could be excused for trying to lay low, as in this not-even-trying-to-fool-you Photoshop job.
10. Statue of Liberty + Kitty
Like No. 9, this one didn’t take any sophisticated sleuthing to debunk. The Atlantic‘s Madrigal scores it “fake (but awesome).”

When Michelle and I finally met, she responded to that innocence inside of me. She saw past the damage, and the disorder. She took the chance and looked deeper than she had any reason to. Every day I question whether someone who has lived the life I had to and has done the things that I have deserves to be loved. For the last ten-years she has never asked me to deserve her, she just loves me as I am and accepts me.
I went through hell. There is no nice way to put it. That doesn’t matter anymore. I have the life I always dreamed of as a child. I am loved. I am part of a family. I have a home. I may never be able to work a regular job. I may always be socially awkward. None of that matters, because I am loved. We had some pretty rough times over the years, and we lost each other for a little while. We never gave up completely, she never walked away.
It is my deepest hope that this book will show whoever reads it that what is happening now doesn’t matter. It passes, and it always will. If I can survive the miserable start to life I had, if I can find a mate who loves me because I am different not in spite of it then there is hope for anyone. Someone in a chat group that I am in told me, if you hadn’t been trapped in the dark for so long would you realize just how bright the light you are in now was? She was right. My darkness is passing; a lifetime of love, acceptance and peace lie ahead of me. I am very grateful for all I have now, but the most important thing is finally having a family that I can love with all my heart and know that love is returned.
Maybe the person reading this is just entering their dark time. Maybe they are living through something worse that I can describe in my books. I would tell them to stay strong even when it would be so much easier to surrender. I would tell them there is light, it can be shrouded to the point you start to lose faith but the light is there. It isn’t found in some celestial being. You don’t need to hope it exists when this life is finally over. The light, and the love is all around you and you do deserve it. It does get better. Believe in yourself, and believe that with patience and strength you can survive long enough to enjoy it as I am now. Don’t lose faith in people. They might let you down, hurt you, or insult you. It’s because they are dealing with their own darkness too. Never surrender your ability to love as if you have never been hurt. Never close your heart, and always be willing to feel for others even if they don’t return the favor. It gets better

This article describes the purpose and security of the UpdatusUser account created on Optimus notebooks as well as by the NVIDIA Update software.
NVIDIA UpdateNVIDIA Update is an optional software component that can be installed on systems with GeForce or ION GPUs as well as Optimus notebooks during driver installation. Once installed, NVIDIA Update scans the hardware and current driver version to determine the appropriate driver for the installed NVIDIA GPUs. Based on this information, NVIDIA Update notifies the user when a new driver is available and directs the user to the driver on www.nvidia.com. NVIDIA Update also automatically updates application profiles and SLI profiles to ensure proper functioning of new applications, or newer versions of older applications.

Purpose of the 'UpdatusUser' AccountBeginning with driver version 188.97 for Optimus notebooks, the driver creates a special Windows user account for security purposes, named UpdatusUser.1 This account is a dedicated and write-restricted user account that runs a service for updating Optimus profiles through the NVIDIA server. The service cannot be run without this account. On Optimus notebooks, this account is created regardless of whether NVIDIA Update is installed. When NVIDIA Update is installed, the additional driver update, application profile and SLI profile update capabilities become available.
Beginning with Release 270 drivers for desktops, when NVIDIA Update is installed, the software creates the UpdatusUser account. This account runs the NVIDIA Update service for updating application profiles through the NVIDIA server. Again, the service cannot be run without this account.
NVIDIA has taken every precaution to make the NVIDIA driver implementation of UpdatusUser as secure as possible. This implementation has been audited by Veracode (www.veracode.com) -a third party security auditor- and has been given a rating of "Best". NVIDIA Update-with the UpdatusUser account- is considered a low security risk implementation.
Removing the UpdatusUser Account
To remove the UpdatusUser account from desktop PCs, you must remove the NVIDIA Update software (and all its functionality) from your PC. To remove NVIDIA Update software, either:
• Uninstall the NVIDIA Update software using Windows Programs and Features, or
• Reinstall the NVIDIA driver but do not install (deselect) the NVIDIA Update softwareTo remove the UpdatusUser account from Optimus notebooks, you must uninstall the entire NVIDIA graphics driver from the notebook. It is not possible to remove the UpdatusUser account without uninstalling the driver.
1. NVIDIA has ensured that this user name does not appear on the Windows welcome logon screen. However, the Windows recovery console uses different logic to display available user accounts, and so the name appears under the System Recovery options.

Telus, Bell upgrade Sea to Sky corridor cellular service
Data transferring faster on modern smart phones

Telus and Bell mobile users with a new smart phone have likely noticed applications are downloading more quickly than ever and data is moving at faster speeds.
Telus has reported that it has just completed a $1.7 million system upgrade to bring the fastest mobile service technology in the world to the Sea to Sky corridor. Bell and Telus customers with the latest mobile phones are now tapping into 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) cellular service while those with older phones or service provided by Rogers are accessing slower services like 4G Evolved High-Speed Packet Access (HSPA+).
The higher speed LTE service moves data at up to 75 megabits per second (Mbps) while HSPA+ pushes data at up to 42 Mbps.
Jacqueline Michelis of Bell's media relations department in Ottawa confirmed this week that the corridor was recently updated with the new technology.
Shawn Hall from the Telus media relations office said that what it simply means for Telus customers with modern smart phones is that download speeds will be comparable to the speed that data moves through a wired Internet connection.
"You have to have an LTE device in order for it to work on this network," said Hall from Vancouver. "It is like upgrading from a DVD player to a Blue Ray player. The new iPhone 5, for example, is compatible with LTE. What you will notice is that your wireless Internet speeds are two or three times faster."
In addition to moving data faster, Hall said the upgrade means streaming video using a smart phone is also improved. He said there isn't much difference with voice operations as the improvements are found with data movement.
Hall added that LTE is emerging as the international standard for wireless service.
"This is a significant investment we've made," said Hall. "We had to visit every wireless site that we have from Pemberton all the way down to Lions Bay and add new technology and upgrade systems."
The other major national wireless phone and data service provider, Rogers, is still using the slower 4G HSPA+ system in the Sea to Sky corridor. Rogers indicates through its website that it is in the process of upgrading to the LTE technology.
The latest communication devices from Motorola, LG, Samsung, HTC, Apple, Huawei and Blackberry are all compatible with 4G LTE technology.

5 Gifts of Being Highly Sensitive | World of Psychology
Today I have the pleasure of interviewing Douglas Eby,
M.A./Psychology, who is a writer and researcher on the psychology of creative
expression, high ability and personal growth. He is creator of the Talent
Development Resources series of sites (including HighlySensitive.org)
at http://talentdevelop.com. I know many of you are “highly sensitive” and enjoy articles on that topic, so I am excited to pique his highly-sensitive brain today!
Question: If you had to name the top five gifts of being highly sensitive, what would they be?
Douglas:
1. Sensory detail
One of the prominent “virtues” of high sensitivity is the richness of sensory detail that life provides. The subtle shades of texture in clothing, and foods when cooking, the sounds of music or even traffic or people talking, fragrances and colors of nature. All of these may be more intense for highly sensitive people.
Of course, people are not simply “sensitive” or “not sensitive” — like other qualities and traits, it’s a matter of degree.
Years ago, I took a color discrimination test to work as a photographic technician, making color prints. The manager said I’d scored better, with more subtle distinctions between hues in the test charts, than anyone he had evaluated.
That kind of response to color makes visual experience rich and exciting, and can help visual artists and designers be even more excellent.
2. Nuances in meaning
The trait of high sensitivity also includes a strong tendency to be aware of nuances in meaning, and to be more cautious about taking action, and to more carefully consider options and possible outcomes.
3. Emotional awareness
We also tend to be more aware of our inner emotional states, which can make for richer and more profound creative work as writers, musicians, actors or other artists.
A greater response to pain, discomfort, and physical experience can mean sensitive people have the potential, at least, to take better care of their health.
4. Creativity
Psychologist Elaine Aron, author of The Highly Sensitive Person, estimates about twenty percent of people are highly sensitive, and seventy percent of those are introverted, which is a trait that can also encourage creativity.
As examples, there are many actors who say they are shy, and director Kathryn Bigelow, who recently won an Academy Award, has said, “I’m kind of very shy by nature.” The star of her movie The Hurt Locker, Jeremy Renner (who was reportedly shy as a child), has commented that “in social situations she can be painfully shy.”
5. Greater empathy
High sensitivity to other people’s emotions can be a powerful asset for teachers, managers, therapists and others.
Question: And, if you had to name five curses, what would they be? And how best do we overcome them or co-exist with them?
Douglas:
1. Easily overwhelmed, overstimulated
The biggest challenge in high sensitivity is probably being vulnerable to sensory or emotional overwhelm. Taking in and processing so much information from both inner and outer worlds can be “too much” at times and result in more pain, fatigue, stress, anxiety and other reactions.
An intriguing neuroscience research study I came across that may explain some of this said people with nervous systems having decreased latent inhibition are more open to incoming stimuli. Which can be a good thing, or not so good.
Actor Amy Brenneman once commented, “I’m too sensitive to watch most of the reality shows. It’s so painful for me.”
That kind of pain or discomfort can mean we don’t choose to experience some things that might actually be fun or enriching. Though I don’t mean reality shows.
2. Affected by emotions of others
Another aspect of sensitivity can be reacting to the emotions — and perhaps thoughts — of others. Being in the vicinity of angry people, for example, can be more distressing.
As actor Scarlett Johansson once put it, “Sometimes that awareness is good, and sometimes I wish I wasn’t so sensitive.”
3. Need lots of space and time to ourselves
We may need to “retreat” and emotionally “refresh” ourselves at times that are not always best for our goals or personal growth. For example, being at a professional development conference, it may not be the most helpful thing to leave a long presentation or workshop in order to recuperate from the emotional intensity of the crowd.
4. Unhealthy perfectionism
There can also be qualities of thinking or analyzing that lead to unhealthy perfectionism, or stressful responses to objects, people or situations that are “too much” or “wrong” for our sensitivities.
5. Living out of sync with our culture
Living in a culture that devalues sensitivity and introversion as much as the U.S. means there are many pressures to be “normal” — meaning extroverted, sociable and outgoing.
Dr. Ted Zeff, author of The Highly Sensitive Person’s Survival Guide, points out that other cultures, such as Thailand, have different attitudes, with a strong appreciation of sensitive or introverted people.
Jenna Avery, a “life coach for sensitive souls,” counsels people to accept or even pursue being “out of sync” with mainstream society, and be aware of other’s judgments of people as too sensitive, too emotional, or too dramatic.
And if we are sensitive, we may use those kinds of judgments against ourselves, and think, as Winona Ryder said she did at one time, “Maybe I’m too sensitive for this world.”
Certainly, there are extremes of emotions that are considered mood disorders, for example, and should be dealt with as a health challenge.
But “too emotional” or “too sensitive” are usually criticisms based on majority behavior and standards.
Overall, I think being highly sensitive is a trait we can embrace and use to be more creative and aware. But it demands taking care to live strategically, even outside popular values, to avoid overwhelm so we can better nurture our abilities and creative talents.
